New! Finding God in Literature: Babette’s Feast

New! Finding God in Literature: Babette’s Feast

with Amy Bentinganan

Every great story is an invitation into a spiritual conversation. In a small, remote fishing village on the coast of Norway, live two siters, Martine and Philippa. They belong to a small, pious religious sect started by their father that believes they must denounce worldly pleasures to better serve God. This austere, rigid life is contrasted by a French women named Babette who suddenly appears at their doorstep. The kindly sisters take her in and in exchange for lodgings, Babette cooks for them. However, it is not until years later that the truth of the Frenchwoman’s previous life comes to light. And in a remarkable act of generosity, Babette hosts a meal that brings joy and reconciliation to the small community. In this 4-week study we’ll consider various literary themes, Biblical allusions and finish with a “feast” of our own as we watch the academy award-winning movie based on the book.
